Yemen's air forces on Tuesday killed at least 15 al-Qaida militants and injured dozens of others in strikes against al-Qaida hideouts in the southern province of Abyan, a local army officer told Xinhua.
The air strikes targeted three buildings near a mosque used by al-Qaida militants as headquarters for meetings and shelter in Jaar area, said the officer who asked to remain anonymous.
The armed forces have made progress in approaching Zinjibar city, the capital city of Abyan, which was seized by al-Qaida. Units of the army troops encircled hundreds of al-Qaida militants from all entrances in Zinjibar, the officer said.
Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) began to withdraw to the outskirts of Zinjibar and to the nearby areas of Jaar and al- Kud areas after the Yemeni air forces struck repeatedly overnight.
